3 Reasons you Need to Know your Core Values in a Relationship

Have you ever wondered why some relationships don’t last beyond the initial attraction?

It’s likely due to a lack of shared core values in a relationship.

Core Values are a fundamental part of who we are and the way we live. They are the qualities you find most important in life and in relationships - dating, marriage, even friendships.

Here’s three reasons you need to know your core values in a relationship, and how to discover yours.

1. You’ll create a foundation for long-term commitment

Having shared or similar core values in a relationship can foster healthy, long-lasting commitments.

If your core values are not in alignment, you set yourselves up for disappointment.

Even if there’s initial attraction, if core values aren’t truly in alignment, the relationship simply won’t take off.  Or it will be built on shaky foundation where one or both partners are likely compromising on their values.

2. You’ll recognize a potential partner faster

Have you ever wondered if you’re seeing “green flags” or “red flags” in dating? Of course you want to know what the red flags are. In this case, red flags could be core values that are not shared (though not always).

A fundamental part of being able to recognize a potential partner (i.e. “green flags”) is to be deeply connected and aligned with your own core values in a relationship.

When you know what’s most important to you, you can recognize it in others.

3. Your self-confidence will increase

When your core values are truly coming from your heart, you will feel less threatened by others who don’t share the same values. So instead of feeling anxious and doubtful when there’s a conflict in values, you’ll feel confident that yours are true for you.

You can also feel more confident talking about your values. So when a date asks you, “what’s most important to you?” or “what are you looking for?” you will feel much more confident answering… because you actually know the answer!

If these core values in a relationship are so important, how do you discover yours?
